With the rollout of the new Aeroplan program on November 9, 2020 and the introduction of the co-branded credit cards by TD, CIBC and American Express, we see Buddy Pass and Companion Pass being tossed around as perks with the various cards.
So, whats the difference?
Buddy Pass
The Buddy Pass entitles a companion to accompany the Basic Cardmember, when the Basic Cardmember books and pays for a published economy fare (plus taxes and third-party charges) on a flight marketed and operated by Air Canada, Air Canada Rouge or under the Air Canada Express brand and is booked for travel within North America.
So, the limitation is within North America i.e. Canada, United States including Hawaii, and Mexico.
Companion Pass
The Companion pass entitles a companion to accompany the Basic Cardmember upon the purchase of a fixed base fare (plus taxes, fees, charges and surcharges), when the Basic Cardmember books a published economy fare on a flight marketed and operated by Air Canada, Air Canada Rouge or under the Air Canada Express brand.
On the surface, it looks exciting – kind of a buy one and get one free.
However one has to keep in mind:
– These can be redeemed on Paid cash fares only – not in conjunction with Aeroplan reward redemptions.
– Although there are no black out dates, if used during peak periods, the fare you pay for the first ticket may be high.
– It is limited to Economy class bookings only, however you can use them in conjunction with eUpgrades.
So, while is seems like a good deal on paper, its not quite an attractive offer. I would rather get the additional welcome bonus, so one is free to book on any airline in the Star Alliance and also pool points as a family.
Not impressed with TD, CIBC, American Express and Aeroplan.
