On the heels of the earlier promo by Etihad where you could buy a voucher and get another 50% added which I wrote about earlier, they have now come out with another promo to buy Etihad Guest Miles where you can get up to 60% more miles.
I want to preface by saying that the team at CanadaPointsGuy does not advocate buying points speculatively as devaluations can occur overnight and award availability can dry up. Only do it if you have an immediate redemption in mind and there is award availability to book it right away.
Now that we have the disclaimer out of the way, this is a limited time opportunity to earn Bonus miles when you buy your Etihad Guest Miles by 18th June. It appears it will drop to up to 30% Bonus once this promo is over.
So, the promo bonus works as below
Buy 6,000 – 20, 000; Get 20% extra
Buy 21,000 – 40,000; Get 40% extra
Buy 41,000 – 100,000; Get 60% extra.
Note that Etihad Guest members excluding Platinum members can buy up to a maximum of 100,000 miles annually while Platinum members can buy upto 150,000 miles annually. Once purchase, they should generally speaking post instantly but can take upto 72 hours, Also, these do not count towards status upgrades.
So what can these miles get you?
If you look for oneway from Abudhabi to Toronto; you will need 100,121 miles and AED 680 in taxes.
You can buy 63,000 miles plus the extra bonus of 37,800 for USD $1260.
So your total cost will be USD $1260 plus AED 680 i.e. USD $1260 plus USD $186 for a total of USD $1446.
Compare this to the cash price(One way international routes are always expensive compared to return) of AED 17,867 which is roughly USD $4865.
So there are significant savings to be gained.
