You will often find miles and points for sale at discounts or an extra 40% or even upto a 100% extra points and miles when you purchase them.
Now, is it worth buying miles and points?
Generally speaking, as a rule of thumb, its usually very expensive to buy them, unless you are chasing that elusive First Class seat and are short by a few miles. It is always never a good idea to buy them speculatively if you dont have a redemption in mind. This is particularly true as mileage programs often introduce devaluations and we have seen this far too many times with Alaska.
One that comes to mind and causes many in the points industry to shed a tear was the change from 90000 miles to 150000 miles for First Class on Emirates almost overnight without warning.
And now, yet another one…
Just last week Alaska introduced the ability to redeem Alaska miles on
Singapore Airlines including their Business Class and First Class
Suites.
This week now, they have devalued it big time. You could redeem 25000
Alaska Miles for one way in Business class between Singapore and China
on Singapore Airlines last week and this has now jumped to 60000 Alaska
Miles this week.
They have also stopped stop-overs on intra-Asia routes.
All I can say is one has to stay on top of things and book flights right away when you can as devaluation can occur any time or restrictions can be applied any time.
Fun stuff!!
