After I last started looking at flights to Goa to laze on the sunny beaches as described in my last post, I decided to delve deeper and see where and how one can snag the flights for less Aeroplan points.
So, in this post we will compare:
a. One way: Toronto-Mumbai-Goa
b. Multi city: Toronto-Mumbai and Mumbai to Goa
c. Two separate One ways: Toronto-Mumbai and Mumbai-Goa.
a. One way: Toronto-Mumbai-Goa
The cost for this is
100,000 Aeroplan points and CAD $98.81 in taxes in fees.
b. Multi city: Toronto-Mumbai and Mumbai to Goa
The cost for this is
96,500 Aeroplan points and CAD $98.81 in taxes and fees
c. Two separate One ways: Toronto-Mumbai and Mumbai-Goa.
The cost for this is
78,700 Aeroplan points and CAD $59.81 in taxes and fees
plus
15,000 Aeroplan points and CAD $44.74 in taxes and fees
Total:
93,700 Aeroplan points and CAD $104.55 in taxes and fees
To compare at a glance:
a. One way: Toronto-Mumbai-Goa
100,000 Aeroplan points and CAD $98.81 in taxes in fees.
b. Multi city: Toronto-Mumbai and Mumbai to Goa
96,500 Aeroplan points and CAD $98.81 in taxes and fees
c. Two separate One ways: Toronto-Mumbai and Mumbai-Goa.
93,700 Aeroplan points and CAD $104.55 in taxes and fees
So, Option c. saves you 6,300 Aeroplan points albiet at a slight higher amount in taxes in fees of CAD $5.74. This $5.74 can net you approx. 318 Aeroplan points if you cancelled a flight and took the refund as Aeroplan points – so you are still ahead by just a tad below 6,000 Aeroplan points.
I would personally lean towards option c. as you have the freedom to invoke the free cancellation and free change as required on each segment independently if I decide to stay in Mumbai for a few days and stay at my favourite home away from home at JW Marriott Sahar.
The down side is your baggage wont be through checked all the way to the final destination and also you lose the 2 piece baggage allowance on the BOM-GOI sector.
So, do play around with different combinations and see which saves you Aeroplan points.
