Credit Cards, Points and Miles

Dont be afraid of Annual Fees

Dont be afraid of Annual Fees

I often hear comments like
“I will never pay an annual fee for a credit card”
or
“What?!? You pay how much for that card?”

In fact, I look at it this way:
I will pay an “Annual Fee” of x amount of dollars, but I will reap x+y amount of dollars worth of benefits from the card
and/or
I will look at getting the “First Year Free”
and/or
I will look at getting a referral bonus as I am in a two player mode
and/or
I will look at reducing the “Annual Fee” by applying through “GreatCanadianRebates.com“

In this post, we will look at how we can reduce the Annual Fee by applying through “GreatCanadianRebates.com“
When you apply through this website, you can get a rebate and in essence reduce your annual fee by unto $100 depending on the credit card that you are applying for.

So, to begin, you would need to go to the “GreatCanadianRebates.com” website and create an account

Next, enter your details

After that, select how you want to get paid – I have personally selected “Direct Deposit”

Finally, you can help support my blog to allow me to offset expenses and to keep my posts coming with tips and ideas to help you in your travels by entering my email to allow me to get a referral bonus.  Enter my email address as “canadapointsguy@gmail.com” and click on “Register”

Now, lets look at how this works using the example of MBNA Alaska Mastercard.  This card does not have a referral bonus so when you are in the two player mode, there is no extra bonus that you can receive by doing a referral as a current card holder.  However, by going through “GreatCanadianRebates.com” you can reduce the annual fee. Additionally, after you refer your Player 2, you will receive 15% of all cash back rebates your Player 2 collects for the next three years.

So, expanding on the example of MBNA Alaska Airlines World Elite Mastercard, the annual fee for this is CAD$99.  By applying through “GreatCanadianRebates.com” you will receive a rebate of CAD$65 which is an elevated rebate currently through till February 27, 2021.  This will reduce your annual fee from CAD$99 to CAD$34.  So, after a spend of CAD$1000 within the first 90 days of account opening you will receive a total of 31,000 Alaska miles i.e. 30,000 miles as the opening bonus miles and 1,000 miles for the spend.  All for an out of pocket expense of CAD$34.

So what can 31,000 Alaska miles get you?
You can fly return from West Coast to East Coast or vice versa for 25,000 Alaska Miles and approx. USD$12 in taxes and still have Alaska Miles leftover.

Compare this to the cash fare of approx. USD$722.

Note you can also use Alaska Miles on partner airlines like Emirates, British Airways, Korean Air etc.  I usually use Alaska Miles to fly on Emirates for 150,000 Alaska miles and approx. USD$62 in taxes.

So, check out “GreatCanadianRebates.com” and get started on your journey.
