Transport Minister Marc Garneau told reporters earlier today “This safety notice restricts commercial passenger flights from any air operator, both domestic and foreign, of the Boeing 737 Max 8 and 9 aircraft from arriving, departing, or overflying Canadian airspace.”
This means Canada is grounding all of its Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft and banning the jet from entering its airspace until further notice as safety concerns continue to mount following two deadly crashes. At the time of writing there are 6 of these aircraft operated by Air Canada and West Jet in Canadian airspace and they will be allowed to complete the flight.
Whilst it is not certain what exactly caused the two tragedies, 2 is a very high number when the error margin in aviation should be o. Additionally, due to mounting pressure from the travelling Canadian, it is better to err on the side of caution as the safety of Canadians should always be paramount and must not bow to any political or financial pressure. God forbid if there was any catastrophe from flying these aircrafts, the economic repercussions would have been more significant, not to mention gaining public faith again on flying with Canadian airlines.
Well done Transport Minister.
