Aeroplan seems to be on a roll these days leading up to their launch of the new program towards the end of this year. On the heels of their last announcement that they have added Etihad to the fold, today they announced that Azul now joins Aeroplan as a new airline partner.
Here are some facts on Azul:
Azul Brazilian Airlines (Azul) is a Brazilian carrier based in São Paulo. They operate with a fleet of over 140 aircrafts connecting popular business and leisure destinations. The airline serves over 100 destinations across South America as well as select routes to Europe and the United States. Aeroplan members can earn up to 150% of the miles they fly on most scheduled flights operated by Azul.

Redeeming Aeroplan on Azul
It appears that the closest airport you can connect from to a flight on Azul is either Orlando or Fort Lauderdale. So, in essence you can take a United flight (to keep surcharges low) to/from these two US cities and then connect with Azul.
Here is their route map
A trip from Fort Lauderdale to Iguassu Falls costs 55,000 Aeroplan miles and only $15.33 in taxes in fees for the long haul in Business and the short hop in Economy.
You can add a departure from Toronto for e.g. for the same amount of Aeroplan Miles but the taxes and fees jump to $113.40.
I am sure if we play around, we can find a flight on United and connect to Azul and tthe taxes and fees will be much lower.
So, its great to see Aeroplan adding more partners and I am sure we will see more exciting announcements by the time they launch this new program.
