I must say I am impressed with all the positive changes and updates that Aeroplan has been rolling out since air travel has practically come to a halt and chances are quite a few members who only accumulate/redeem with travel run the risk of inactivity and thereby losing the Aeroplan miles in their accounts.
Aeroplan just announced today that they are “Introducing three improvements specifically related to mileage expiration, ahead of the relaunch of Aeroplan later this year.”
1. More time to keep your account active
Effective July 20, 2020 Aeroplan is waiving the current expiry provisions and members will now have 18 months to keep their accounts active. All you need to do to stay active is earn or redeem a single mile.
Here are some of the other options to keep your account active:
- Shopping online with one of the over 150 retail partners
- Redeeming for gift cards and merchandise
- Donating miles to a participating charity
- Buying miles to get to your next reward
- Converting your miles from another loyalty program
- Transferring miles from one account to another
2. Miles never expire for Aeroplan credit card holders
Aeroplan Miles do not expire for those who hold any of the Aeroplan affiliated credit cards, as well as for Air Canada Altitude members.
3. More flexible options to reinstate your Aeroplan Miles
There is always the option to pay a fee and have the Aeroplan Miles re-instated immediately.
However, there is now a new way – Within six months of the account becoming inactive, just fly on an eligible Air Canada ticket or get any Aeroplan credit card. All of those recently-expired Aeroplan Miles will get re-instated.
Also, if members purchased a trip with Air Canada with travel commencing anytime since January 2020 and had to cancel their travel plans, Aeroplan will reinstate all of the Aeroplan Miles which have expired since the beginning of this year.
This is great news coming from Aeroplan and I am looking forward to the re-launch of their program.
